Specialty Classes: Solo and Performance Skills
This summer the Aalim School is pleased to offer two special classes designed to help you enhance your performance skills and grow as a dancer, whatever your own personal style and skill level may be! These solo and performance skills classes are each run as a 6-week session, and there is a public performance opportunity at the end of the session.

| Short Description (Click for a pdf flyer with full description): Whether you're interested in preparing for your first solo performance or you are not interested in performing solo yet but would like to work on your performance skills and understand what goes into a solo performance, you'll enjoy this special six-week course. This class will include a combination of lecture, demonstration, technique work, dance exercises and coaching. We will address topics such as: choosing your the music; choreography, combinations and improvisation; Middle Eastern instrumentation and drums; makeup and costuming; performance skills, presentation, entrances and exits. There is a performance opportunity at the end of the session (5 minute time limit). Class is mixed-level, but at minimum of one session of Advanced Beginner or Level 2 is recommended. Class size is limited to 14 students. | |

| Short Description (Click for a pdf flyer with full description): Maybe you have already performed solo and want to take your performance to the next level, or maybe you have plenty of group performance and technique experience and you're ready to take the plunge into solo performance—this class is for you! Designed for students who are interested in learning about dancing to more complex music (such as Orientale/classical pieces or more rhythmically complex pieces), putting together short sets, and/or the business of belly dance, this class will include a combination of lecture, group discussion, technique work, dance exercises, and personal one-on-one coaching. We will address topics such as: creating a solo set; what to do when you get "the call"; the dancer's essentials; listening to music; selecting the right performance for the right audience; developing your own dance style; creating an audition piece; refining your performance skills; controversies in Middle Eastern dance and ethics; creating dynamic elements and building interest; and more. Plus, more work on presentation, improvisation vs. choreography, entrances and exits, and makeup and costuming. There is a performance opportunity at the end of the session (10 minutes maximum.) This class is appropriate for students who have taken the Preparing for Performance class, but past solo or solo class experience is NOT required. Class is mixed level but a minimum of one session Level 2 is required; more than one session of Level 2 or a Level 3, 4, or 5 status is recommended. Please note: to ensure individual attention, coaching, and a high-quality experience this class is limited to a strict maximum of 9 students. Advanced registration is strongly recommended. | |
